BEYOND Biohacking: Exploring the Invisible Forces That Shape Human Performance

At this year’s BEYOND Biohacking Conference, one theme surfaced repeatedly: the future of human performance lies in understanding the invisible forces that shape how we feel, recover, and perform.

Throughout the event, conversations centered around sleep optimization, wearable technologies, recovery tools, and emerging wellness innovations. But beneath many of these discussions was a larger idea, that some of the most influential drivers of health operate beneath conscious awareness.

During his speaker session at BEYOND, Infrared Energy: The Invisible Input Optimizing Human Performance, Hologenix, LLC, CEO Seth Casden explored one of these often-overlooked forces: infrared energy.

The Invisible Forces Shaping Human Performance

Most of us spend our lives optimizing what we can see. We pay attention to the foods on our plates, the workouts on our calendars, and the metrics displayed on our wearable devices. We track our sleep scores, count our steps, and monitor our recovery. Yet many of the systems that influence how we feel each day are completely invisible. Oxygen fuels every cell in the body. Hormones help regulate energy and mood. Electrical signals travel continuously through the nervous system. The microbiome communicates with the brain and immune system in ways we’re still working to understand.

Light belongs on that list, too. Although we tend to think of light only as something we can see, most of the electromagnetic spectrum exists outside our visual perception. Our bodies, however, still respond to it continuously. As Seth said, “You can’t see it, but your biology responds to it.” Infrared energy is one example.

Understanding Infrared Energy

Located just beyond visible red light on the electromagnetic spectrum, infrared (IR) is a form of light energy that our biology can interact with even though we cannot see it. When many people hear the word infrared, they think of warmth— IR saunas, heat lamps, or heated therapies. While these heated therapies can certainly be associated with IR, it’s only part of the story. Infrared interacts with tissue at the cellular level, and researchers have spent decades studying its role in human physiology.

Infrared and Cellular Energy Production

Research in photobiomodulation has explored how specific wavelengths of light can support mitochondrial function. Often referred to as the “powerhouses of the cell,” mitochondria produce ATP, the energy currency that fuels nearly every process in the body.

Every thought, movement, and recovery process requires energy. By supporting cellular energy production, infrared has been studied for its role in supporting local circulation, recovery, thermoregulation, endurance, and overall comfort and wellbeing.

The Delivery Challenge in Modern Wellness

Today’s wellness landscape offers no shortage of tools and protocols. Infrared saunas, red light panels, recovery clinics, and wearable technologies have made it easier than ever to pursue optimization. Many of these tools can provide meaningful benefits. They also have something in common: they require time, access, and room in your daily routine to schedule one more thing.

Even the most dedicated health enthusiasts encounter the realities of busy schedules, travel, family responsibilities, and competing priorities. The challenge often isn’t knowing what supports wellbeing—it’s finding sustainable ways to integrate it into everyday life.

“You can’t out-discipline biology.” That idea resonated strongly throughout the conference. Sometimes, the next opportunity for optimization isn’t another protocol. It’s finding ways to make supportive inputs more accessible and consistent.

The Rise of Passive Wellness

One of the most compelling ideas from Seth’s session was the concept of passive wellness, when wellness works in the background. Rather than adding more steps to our routines, passive wellness focuses on integrating supportive inputs into the activities we already do every day, like sleeping, working, exercising, and recovering.

Modern innovations in materials science have made it possible to embed infrared-responsive minerals directly into textiles. These minerals can capture and convert a portion of the body’s natural energy and return it in the form of infrared energy.

“You become the power source.” No batteries. No charging. No appointments. No additional time commitment. Instead, supportive infrared technology can become part of products people already use every day, working quietly in the background while they rest, recover, and go about their lives.

Measurable, Data-Driven Benefits

The biohacking community has long embraced the idea that data drives better decisions. Today’s wearables make it possible to track sleep, recovery, readiness, heart rate, and countless other biomarkers with greater precision than ever before.

That accessibility has fundamentally changed the wellness conversation. People no longer need to rely solely on assumptions about what may be supporting their wellbeing. They can experiment, observe patterns, and make more informed decisions based on their own experiences and data.

“Wellness used to be a matter of trust. Now it’s a matter of measurement.”

Perhaps that’s why conversations around infrared resonated so strongly at this year’s BEYOND Biohacking. It represents another opportunity to better understand one of the many invisible forces our bodies have been responding to all along.

Looking Beyond Biohacking

At BEYOND Biohacking, one message resonated clearly: not every opportunity to improve health requires another protocol or another hour in the day. Sometimes, progress comes from better understanding the invisible forces already interacting with our biology—and finding new ways to bring those supportive inputs into everyday life.
